Driving to Yosemite we stopped at the historic Carmel Mission which has an adjacent school. The courtyard was empty and overcast, filled with the laughter and yells of children at the nearby but unseen playground. Passing through mountains covered in succulents and sea breeze, we watched the scenery change to dry and barren and then finally to lush forest.
